Critical Kidneys: Technician-Focused Care for Cats with Acute Kidney Injury

Speaker:
Caitlin Dutcher-Lundy, RVT, VTS (CP-Feline)

Acute kidney injury (AKI) in cats is a complex and emergent condition that requires rapid recognition, careful diagnostics, and intensive nursing care. While veterinarians guide diagnosis and treatment decisions, veterinary technicians play a critical role in the nursing care. This session will explore the pathophysiology and common causes of feline AKI, including prerenal, intrinsic renal, and postrenal disease processes. AKI grading and relation to chronic kidney disease (CKD) will also be evaluated. Nursing care strategies including fluid therapy monitoring, hydration assessment, nausea management, nutritional support, pain assessment, and emotional welfare of hospitalized feline patients is the focus being presented. The session will also review caregiver education and burden. A practical case will be shared to illustrate how veterinary technicians can contribute to the intensive care of a feline patient hospitalized for AKI.
